Broadway Performer First Meeting

February 7, 2016, 2:00pm – February 7, 2016, 4:00pm

Lake Benton Opera House

Welcome to Broadway meets Lake Benton. I am Graham Wrightson, and I am excited to be directing this year’s Broadway show! I would like to invite you to a First Meeting on Sunday, February 7th from 2:00-400 p.m. If you are interested in being a part of the show please come along. If you cannot be in attendance, please let me know what you would be interested in singing. This year people will be limited to one solo number in order to give everyone a chance, but anyone who wants to is highly encouraged to sing a duet or trio or other group number as their second song. We hope to do at least two whole group numbers to begin and end the show and perhaps a smaller group song in the middle such as an octet. The music for the group songs will be distributed at the first rehearsal. All people wanting to sing solos will be expected to audition with their song of choice mostly in order to keep a limit on the number of performances to a total show length of 1:45 less. If you have any questions please contact me! Jeanine Fricke has agreed to be our accompanist this year, but as always, you may bring a backing track if you so desire. There will be two shows on March 19 at 2:00 and 7:30. We will discuss rehearsal dates in the days to come. Looking forward to working with all of you. Sincerely, Graham

Announcing Opera House “Fiddler On the Roof” Auditions.

Tryouts for the summer musical “Fiddler on the Roof” will be held on Sunday, May 31 at 1 p.m. and Tuesday, June 2 at 7 p.m. There are a variety of roles large and small, young and old. The show will run July 23, 24, 25 29, 30, 31 and Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m., and July 26Aug. 1 and 2 at 2 p.m.

Bring a song to sing. An accompanist will be provided if you bring a song from the show. If it is not from the show, either bring backing tracks on CD, accompany yourself or perform a cappella. A possible callback night could be scheduled for Thursday, June 4. Rehearsals will begin on or about June 8.

We would like to announce that the part of Tevye has been cast already. Former Lake Benton resident and Opera House President in the 80s and 90s, Mark Gould will reprise his role from 21 years ago at the Opera House. We are excited to have him taking the role. This will be Mark’s fourth time playing the part of Tevye.

We still need lots and lots of men and women, so we would love to have you come and join us.

The Opera House will also be seeking volunteers to perform in the orchestra. A variety of parts will be needed. For more information on the show, contact Mark Wilmes at markwilmes@gmail.com.

Lake Benton Area Singers to meet Sunday

The Lake Benton Area Singers will be starting up again on Sunday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kimball Building next to the Lake Benton Opera House. The group welcomes anyone from the area to join the chorus, no matter the level of experience in singing. Music will be in three parts, soprano, also and a combined men’s section. This year’s songs will come from shows like “Cats”, “Les Miserables” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” as well as others.

The project will be directed by Graham Wrightson of Brookings, S.D., an Assistant Professor on the staff of South Dakota State University. Wrightson says that all ages and abilities are welcome and that no auditions will be held. Just show up. “We will even teach the tone-deaf to sing in a friendly and forgiving environment,” says Wrightson.
The group performed a benefit concert on Saddle Horse weekend last year, and a similar performance is planned for this year.
Weekly attendance will be encouraged but will not be required to be in the group. Wrightson says that that even if singers can’t make the initial kickoff on the 29th, they may join in at any time. “If you enjoy singing or simply want a fun social activity to perk up your Sunday evenings, this may be the project for you,” Wrightson says.
